Collision, 2023, single channel video w sound, 14:16 minutes. Trigger Warning: car accidents
Collision
Today, we are bombarded with sensational videos – the more shocking, the more views they receive. Nothing is more in-the-moment than a car accident in real life and yet when viewed on our phones or from the corner of a webpage, there's a disconnection. There’s a desensitization. The injury the victim suffered feels insignificant and death becomes disposable and consumable.
Collision comprises 624 car accident videos harvested from social media and then carefully organized as a composite artwork. I've taken care to depower and dislocate the content from its original digital form, while replaying the same videos and original audiotrack in aggregate and in intentional loops. The audio—music included—is built entirely from the videos themselves, preserved and layered to echo the relentless rhythm of the content. The viewer experiences the bombardment, sadness and destructive nature of the content through a new and unfamiliar lens, with a reminder of our humanity and the Internet’s impact on our collective consciousness.
